How to Do the EFT Process

By Julie Metzler, EFT-Adv, NPI

Step 1: Identify the Problem:

Focus the mind on the problem by using a statement of the problem (even if it is a negative statement). Example:
A: “I am afraid of heights.”
B: “My knee is constantly throbbing.”
C: “I am raging angry at ______.”
D: “I can’t stand my boss/job.”
E: “My kids are driving me crazy.”

Step 2: Rate the Intensity from 0-10 (0 = none, 10 = worst it has ever been)

How distressing is this thought/memory to me?
How much pain do I feel?
How much do I hate my job?

Step 3: The Setup Statement: While tapping the Karate Chop Point, state the problem 3 times

A: “Even though I’m terrified of heights, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
B: “Even though my knee is killing me, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
C: “Even though I am so raging angry at_____, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
D: “Even though I can’t stand my boss/job, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
E: Even though my kids are driving me crazy, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Step 4: Tap the Rest of the Points With the Reminder Phrase

A: “terrified of heights”
B: “my painful knee”
C: “This raging anger”
D: “Can’t stand my boss/job”
E: “Kids drive me crazy”

Step 5: Rate the Intensity from 0-10 Again

If the intensity of the thought or feeling is not 0 or 1 repeat process this way:

Tap Karate Chop Point and say 3 times:
A: “Even though I still have this fear of heights, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Tap remaining points with:
A: “This remaining fear of heights.”
